Program Overview

The nursing program at Southwestern Michigan College is committed to providing quality nursing education to students that will benefit clients, employers, and the dynamic and diverse community. Graduates will successfully embody the ability to promote human well-being by exhibiting sound nursing judgment and demonstrating an inquiry in practice during the continual development of their professional identity in a culturally diverse society. Upon successful completion of the three-semester program, the graduate will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). NOTE: An approved Department application is needed prior to acceptance into the NURS course sequence.

To earn this degree, students must fulfill all requirements as defined by the Graduation Requirements for Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree Programs . Each student should submit a graduation application at least one full semester before they plan to graduate. Courses taken out of sequence may delay a student’s ability to complete the program in a timely manner. Please refer to the Example Course Sequencing below and consult your advisor regularly. A student’s graduation from an accredited program and active LPN license of less than two years satisfies the courses: NURS 160 , NURS 168  and NURS 170 . A student’s graduation from an accredited program and active LPN license of two years or more satisfies the courses: NURS 160 , NURS 168 , NURS 170 , ENGL 103 /ENGL 103W , MATH 127 , BIOL 214 , BIOL 215 , and PSYC 101 .
